How To Get To Dung Eater Location And Quest Progression

The Loathsome Dung Eater is one of the most sinister yet intriguing non-playable characters in Elden Ring. Unlocking his questline allows players to access a unique ending and earn distinct equipment, but finding his physical form requires navigating dark underground tunnels. Understanding how to find his initial location and advance his storyline ensures you will not miss key story triggers.
Initial Encounter at Roundtable Hold
Players first encounter the spirit of the Dung Eater in the Roundtable Hold after reaching the Altus Plateau region. He sits in a newly unlocked chamber located past the Twin Maiden Husks merchant. To gain his attention and advance the storyline, players must present him with at least one Seedbed Curse item found in the world.
Presenting a Seedbed Curse prompts the NPC to recognize your foul nature and hand over the Sewer-Gaol Key. This key is essential for locating his physical body, which remains locked in a subterranean prison. Once you acquire this key, your next objective takes you beneath the capital city.
Locating the Sewer-Gaol in Leyndell
The physical body of the Dung Eater is trapped deep within the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds beneath Leyndell. Adventurers must start from the Underground Roadside Site of Grace and navigate through dangerous sewer grates. Dropping down into the lower pipes leads past giant toxic flowers directly toward a ladder leading to his cell.
Using the Sewer-Gaol Key allows you to unlock the door and speak directly to his physical form. You can choose to free him from his captivity, which causes him to leave the sewers temporarily. This choice sets up a confrontation in the outer waters surrounding the capital.
Confrontation at the Outer Moat
After being freed, the Dung Eater leaves an ominous message in his Roundtable Hold room challenging you to a duel. Players must head to the outer moat located north of Leyndell to trigger his invasion encounter. Defeating his red phantom rewards you with the Sword of Milos and forces him to return to the hold.
It is worth noting that this encounter intersects with Blackguard Big Boggart's questline if you have progressed his storyline. Defeating the invading phantom allows you to return to the Roundtable Hold to receive further instructions. He will then demand that you desecrate his body with additional curses.
Completing the Quest for the Mending Rune
To reach the conclusion of the quest, players must locate five Seedbed Curses scattered across the Lands Between. Returning to his physical body in the sewer cell allows you to offer these key items one by one. Once all five are delivered, he grants you the Mending Rune of the Fell Curse.
This rune unlocks the Age of Despair ending when used on Marika's shattered body after the final boss fight. Reloading the area after receiving the rune lets you collect his full Omen armor set from his corpse. Alternatively, giving him Seluvis's Potion turns him into a spirit puppet summon for future battles.
